Gin

Gin is a colorless type of vodka based on juniper and other herbs and, sometimes, fruits and spices. It was founded in the 17th century in the former Netherlands under the name Genever / Genièvre / Jenever. It was probably created by Dr. Franciscus de la Boë from the University of Leiden, who was looking for an effective medicament to prevent kidney stones. Other sources say that the gin was created by another Dutch doctor - Dr. Francisus Sylviis.

At first, treated only as medicine, gin quickly gained recognition in Great Britain. It was spread by British soldiers who received their dose of it, and by drinking it along with tonic, they successfully protected themselves against malaria and scurvy during military operations in India (of course, due to the quinine contained in the tonic). Following the high tariffs imposed on brandy and wines at the end of the 17th century, the importance of gin as a liquor in the United Kingdom increased significantly, while its quality also declined significantly. Who could and knew how to do that back in the day, was making gin illegally, and so, the excessive production of dubious gin was to be curtailed by the so-called Gin Act. However, the production went underground, and gin, until the beginning of the 19th century, when small moonshineries collapsed, was treated as an unsophisticated drink for commoners.

Nowadays, gin is mainly produced where British and Dutch influences used to reach. In addition to Great Britain and the Netherlands, gin is produced also in Spain, USA, South Africa, Australia or Belgium.

There are several types of gin. These are: Dry Gin (the most classic, delicate), English London Dry Gin (the most famous, dry, strong, perfectly colorless), Plymouth Gin (reserved only for the city of Plymouth and its distillery), Old Tom Gin (clearly sweeter than the classic) and gins aged in barrels and flavored (including French gins, Dutch both young and old sweetish jenever, German dornkaat, delicate American gins, or low-percentage sloe gin liqueur).
